"The Sacre Project" is a multidisciplinary dance piece, which re-envisions the original performance of Stravinsky and Nijinsky's "The Rite of Spring". The piece premiered at UC Irvine in March, 2013 and opened as part of the Pacific Symphony (Costa Mesa, CA) season in June, 2013. The transformative compositions come from my recording of the two-piano version of "Rite of Spring" performed by pianists Nina Scolnik and Lorna Griffitt. All the sounds came from that recording session - although some are extraneous noises in the hall, performer voices and piano mechanical noises. All transformations were done in ProTools using Waves plugins. No synthesis or MIDI was used. These sounds (from Sacre: part one) were created in conjunction with and inspired by choreographer Lisa Naugle by my participating in the rehearsal process with her and the dancers. A sample of the unprocessed piano recording is also included. Each of the 5 "pods" played simultaneously and the audience was free to wander the room. The "Interstitial" sounds like a bell but it is constructed with additive harmonics using pitch-shifting -- it played between pod sequences. |
